You call. Your dog glances back, decides you're not that interesting, and paddles another ten feet out. You call again, louder this time, in the voice that sounds a little too much like panic. Now you're the one who's stressed and your dog thinks it's a game.
A dog who won't leave the water isn't being stubborn. The lake is simply more fun than you are right now, and your job is to change that math.
Why Recall Falls Apart Near Water
Water is exciting, and excitement drowns out a lot of training. A recall that works great in the kitchen can fall apart at the shoreline, because the reward for ignoring you is simply too good: splashing, cool water, ducks. And if "come" has ever ended the fun, your dog has learned that coming means the party is over.
Build It in Small, Easy Steps
- 🐾Start dry and boring. Reward a fast recall at home, then in the yard, then near a kiddie pool.
- 🐾Use a long line near real water so you can back up your cue without yelling or chasing.
- 🐾Pay big. Save the very best treat or toy for coming away from water.
- 🐾Practice in shallow water first, where your dog can easily come back to you.
The most important rule: a recall should almost never end the fun. Call, reward, then often send your dog right back in. That way "come" becomes a doorway to more fun, not the end of it.
Give Them a Destination, Not Just a Command
"Come" can be abstract. "Go to your spot" is concrete. Many dogs learn to head toward a specific, comfortable place, such as a mat on the shore, or their own float, on cue. It gives a dog who's overheated or overstimulated somewhere to settle instead of continuing to cruise around. Reward them on arrival, and let them rest there for a minute before the next round.
Know When to Quit for the Day
If your dog is tired, panting hard, or ignoring everything, don't treat it as a training moment. Calmly bring them in, dry them off, and try again another day when they're fresh. Training works best when you set your dog up to win, and a worn-out dog in cold or deep water is a safety issue first.
